Step 1Preparation of the Offering

Prepare the tarpaṇa ingredients, such as water, sesame seeds, and barley grains, to honor and nourish the pitṛs, the ancestral spirits, as a symbol of respect and gratitude.

Step 2Ācamana and Prāṇāyāma

Perform ācamana, sipping water to purify the body, and prāṇāyāma, regulated breathing, to calm the mind and prepare for the ritual.

Step 3Tarpaṇa Offering

Offer the prepared ingredients to the pitṛs, while reciting the appropriate mantras, such as the Pitṛ Tarpaṇa mantra, to invoke their blessings and pacify their spirits.

Step 4Kuśa Grass and Water Libation

Use kuśa grass to pour libations of water, symbolizing the offering of life force, while reciting the Pitṛ Tarpaṇa mantra to nourish the ancestral spirits.
