Scholarly Commentary

Advaita Vedānta(Ādi Śaṅkarācārya)

Advaita Vedānta (Ādi Śaṅkarācārya): This verse from the Chāndogyopaniṣad is pivotal in understanding the non-dual nature of reality. According to Śaṅkarācārya, the instruction to 'harm no one who is like the Self' (Na hiṃsyān mā ātma-vat) underscores the ultimate identity of all beings with the Ātman. This is in line with his commentary on the Taittirīya Upaniṣad, where he explains that the realization of the unity of all existence is the cornerstone of non-violence (ahiṃsā). By speaking the truth (Satyam vada) and following Dharma, one aligns with this universal principle, thereby recognizing the inherent divinity in all. This verse, in Shankara's view, guides the seeker towards the understanding that the distinctions between beings are illusory, pointing towards the brahman-ātman identity. The emphasis on non-dualism encourages the aspirant to embrace a worldview where harming another is tantamount to harming oneself, fostering a deep sense of compassion and unity.

Vaiṣṇava Tradition(Rāmānujācārya / Madhvācārya)

Vaiṣṇava tradition (Rāmānujācārya / Madhvācārya): In the Vaiṣṇava tradition, this verse is seen as a practical guide for the devotee's relationship with Īśvara and other jīvas. Rāmānujācārya, in his commentary on the Upaniṣads, highlights the importance of truthfulness (Satyam vada) as a means of cultivating devotion and trust in the divine. The injunction to follow Dharma (Dharmaṃ cara) is understood as adherence to one's duties in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, recognizing the divine presence in all beings. The concept of 'not harming any being that is like the Self' (Na hiṃsyān mā ātma-vat) is interpreted as an expression of the natural affection and compassion that arises from realizing the inherent connection between all jīvas, who are considered to be parts of the divine body. This verse, in the Vaiṣṇava view, underscores the importance of living a life of service, love, and non-violence towards all, as a direct expression of one's devotion to Īśvara.

Neo-Vedānta(Swami Vivekānanda / S. Rādhākrishnan)

Neo-Vedānta (Swami Vivekānanda / S. Rādhākrishnan): Swami Vivekānanda often emphasized the universal applicability of the principles enshrined in the Upaniṣads. This verse, with its emphasis on truth, Dharma, and non-violence, is seen as a call to action for the modern age. Vivekānanda, in his lectures and writings, highlighted the need for individuals to embody these principles in their daily lives, recognizing the intrinsic worth and dignity of every human being. The instruction to 'harm no one who is like the Self' is understood as a command to treat all beings with the respect, kindness, and compassion that one would wish for oneself. This, in Vivekānanda's view, is the essence of practical spirituality, leading to a more harmonious and equitable society. Similarly, S. Radhakrishnan, in his philosophical works, underscored the importance of this verse in fostering a global ethos of peace, understanding, and mutual respect, where the recognition of a common humanity leads to a world where violence and discrimination are overcome.
