देवा वै मृत्योर्बिभ्यतस्त्रयीं विद्यां प्राविशꣳस्ते छन्दोभिरच्छादयन्यदेभिरच्छादयꣳस्तच्छन्दसां छन्दस्त्वम् ॥
devā vai mr̥tyorbibhyatastrayīṃ vidyāṃ prāviśaste chandobhiracchādayanyadebhiracchādayastacchandasāṃ chandastvam ||
“Fearing death, the gods entered the threefold lore and covered themselves with metres; because they covered themselves therewith, metres are called chandas (cover).”
