Scholarly Commentary

Advaita Vedānta(Ādi Śaṅkarācārya)

Advaita Vedānta (Ādi Śaṅkarācārya): In his commentary on the Chāndogyopaniṣad, Shankara explicates the verse satyam jñānam anantam brahma to underscore the non-dual nature of Brahman. He argues that Brahman, being truth (satyam), knowledge (jñānam), and infinite (anantam), cannot be separate from the individual self (ātman). According to Shankara, the verse points to the ultimate reality where distinctions between subject and object, and between the individual and the universal, dissolve. This unity is not something to be achieved but is the fundamental nature of existence. In his Bhashya on this Upanishad, Shankara emphasizes that the knowledge (jñānam) mentioned here is not mere intellectual comprehension but the direct, intuitive understanding that reveals the identity of Brahman and Ātman. This interpretation highlights the central theme of Advaita Vedānta: the non-dual (advaita) nature of reality.

Vaiṣṇava Tradition(Rāmānujācārya / Madhvācārya)

Vaiṣṇava tradition (Rāmānujācārya): Rāmānujācārya, in his commentary on the Brahmasūtras, interprets satyam jñānam anantam brahma within the framework of qualified non-dualism (Viśiṣṭādvaita). He posits that Brahman, characterized by truth, knowledge, and infinity, is the supreme Being (Īśvara) who possesses all excellent attributes. The knowledge (jñānam) referred to in the verse is both the knowledge that Brahman has of Himself and the knowledge that devotees have of Brahman. Rāmānujācārya emphasizes the personal relationship between the individual self (jīva) and God (Īśvara), where the ultimate goal is not the dissolution of the individual into Brahman but the attainment of eternal service to God. In his Gītā Bhāṣya, Rāmānujācārya elaborates on how this verse supports the idea of a loving, personal God who is the object of devotion and the ultimate reality. This perspective underscores the devotional aspect of the Vaiṣṇava tradition, focusing on the loving relationship between the devotee and the divine.

Neo-Vedānta(Swami Vivekānanda / S. Rādhākrishnan)

Neo-Vedānta (Swami Vivekānanda / S. Rādhākrishnan): Swami Vivekānanda interprets the verse satyam jñānam anantam brahma as a call to realize one's inner potential and to understand the universal principles of existence. In his lectures and writings, Vivekānanda emphasizes the practical application of this verse, suggesting that the realization of truth, knowledge, and infinity within oneself is the key to individual and societal transformation. He sees this verse as a foundation for a universal philosophy that transcends sectarian boundaries, advocating for the pursuit of knowledge and self-realization as the path to achieving human excellence and global harmony. S. Radhakrishnan, in his philosophical works, further expands on this idea, arguing that the verse encapsulates the essence of Indian philosophy: the pursuit of knowledge and the realization of the absolute as the ultimate goal of human life. Both Vivekānanda and Radhakrishnan highlight the contemporary relevance of this ancient verse, applying its principles to modern challenges and aspirations, and demonstrating its universal appeal and timelessness.
