Vaiṣṇava tradition (Rāmānujācārya / Madhvācārya): In the Vaiṣṇava tradition, the verse 'satyaṃ vada, dharmaṃ cara' is seen as a call to devotion and service to the Supreme Lord, Īśvara. For Rāmānujācārya, speaking the truth and following dharma are essential components of bhakti, as they reflect the natural attributes of the jīva (individual soul) in its relationship with Īśvara. Truthfulness and adherence to dharma are considered fundamental virtues that facilitate the jīva's journey towards mokṣa (liberation), which, in the Viśiṣṭādvaita view, is achieved through prapatti (surrender) to Īśvara. Madhvācārya, from the Dvaita perspective, would also emphasize the importance of truth and dharma but with a stronger emphasis on the distinction between the jīva and Īśvara, highlighting that these practices are means to realize one's dependence on and devotion to the Lord.

Neo-Vedānta (Swami Vivekānanda / S. Rādhākrishnan): Swami Vivekānanda interprets 'satyaṃ vada, dharmaṃ cara' as a universal call to authenticity and moral integrity. He saw these principles as essential for individual and societal progress, emphasizing that truthfulness and adherence to one's dharma (duty) are fundamental to achieving a higher state of consciousness and contributing to the betterment of the world. In his lectures and writings, Vivekānanda often stressed the practical application of these ideals, advocating for education, social service, and the cultivation of compassion and tolerance. S. Radhakrishnan, building on this foundation, underscored the relevance of these values in modern life, arguing that they are essential for fostering a sense of global citizenship and resolving the ethical dilemmas of contemporary society. Both thinkers saw this verse as a guiding principle for living a meaningful and impactful life, one that is grounded in honesty, responsibility, and service to humanity.
