Satyam vada Dharmam cara

Tvaṃ satyam vada, tvam dharmam cara. - You (tvaṃ) speak truth (satyam) and (vada) you (tvam) follow (cara) righteousness (dharmam)

Advaita Vedānta (Ādi Śaṅkarācārya): The verse Satyam vada, Dharmam cara, speaks to the fundamental principles of truth and righteousness. According to Shankara, truth here signifies not just the spoken word but the ultimate reality, Brahman. Dharmam cara, or following dharma, is about aligning one's actions with this reality, leading to the realization of the non-dual nature of Brahman and Ātman. Shankara's commentary on the Taittirīyopaniṣad emphasizes the importance of understanding the identity of Brahman and Ātman, where speaking the truth and following dharma are means to uncover this intrinsic unity. This verse, therefore, points to the path of self-realization, guiding the seeker to transcend the dualistic world and attain the knowledge of the ultimate truth, which is the non-dual Brahman. Through this realization, one understands that all actions and words should reflect this unity, leading to a life of truth and dharma.

Vaiṣṇava tradition (Rāmānujācārya / Madhvācārya): In the Vaiṣṇava perspective, the command to speak the truth and follow dharma is deeply rooted in the relationship between the jīva (individual self) and Īśvara (the Lord). Ramanuja interprets this verse as a call to devotees to embody truthfulness and righteousness as fundamental virtues in their devotion to God. Truthfulness is not just about speaking what is factual but also about being true to one's devotional practice and intentions. Following dharma, for Ramanuja, involves living a life that is pleasing to God, which includes fulfilling one's duties (svadharma) with detachment and offering the fruits of one's actions to the Lord. This verse, therefore, is seen as a foundational principle for the Vaiṣṇava bhakta, guiding them towards a path of devotion that is characterized by sincerity, moral integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility to their spiritual and social duties.

Neo-Vedānta (Swami Vivekānanda / S. Rādhākrishnan): The modern interpretation of Satyam vada, Dharmam cara, brings out its universal applicability and practical relevance. Swami Vivekananda viewed this verse as a call to action for individuals to live a life of integrity and moral strength. He emphasized that truth and dharma are not abstract concepts but living principles that should guide every aspect of human life. For Vivekananda, speaking the truth was about authenticity and honesty in one's words and actions, while following dharma was about living a life that contributes to the greater good of society. Radhakrishnan further elaborated on this, stating that in contemporary life, these principles are more crucial than ever, as they form the foundation of a harmonious and just society. This verse, therefore, is seen as a message of empowerment, encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their actions and words, and to strive for a life of purpose, ethics, and service to others, reflecting the universal and timeless wisdom of Vedanta.
