समन्तपञ्चकं नाम पुण्यं द्विजनिषेवितम् गतवान् अस्मि तं देशं युद्धं यत्राभवत् पुरा पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम्
samantapañcakaṃ nāma puṇyaṃ dvijaniṣevitam gatavān asmi taṃ deśaṃ yuddhaṃ yatrābhavat purā pāṇḍavānāṃ kurūṇāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ ca mahīkṣitām
“Sauti said that he had heard at Janamejaya's snake-sacrifice the sacred stories composed by Krishna-Dwaipayana and recited by Vaisampayana, that he had wandered to many holy places and come to Samantapanchaka, the field of the Kuru-Pandava battle, desiring to see the sages; and he offered to recite the sacred histories.
