चत्वार एकतो वेदा भारतं चैकम् एकतः समागतैः सुरर्षिभिस् तुलाम् आरोपितं पुरा चतुर्भ्यः सरहस्येभ्यो वेदेभ्यो ह्य् अधिकं यदा तदा प्रभृति लोके ऽस्मिन् महाभारतम् उच्यते महत्त्वे च गुरुत्वे च ध्रियमाणं ततो ऽधिकम्
catvāra ekato vedā bhārataṃ caikam ekataḥ samāgataiḥ surarṣibhis tulām āropitaṃ purā caturbhyaḥ sarahasyebhyo vedebhyo hy adhikaṃ yadā tadā prabhṛti loke 'smin mahābhāratam ucyate mahattve ca gurutve ca dhriyamāṇaṃ tato 'dhikam
“In former days the four Vedas were placed on one side and the Bharata on the other and weighed in the balance by the assembled celestials; as the Bharata weighed heavier, it has been called Mahabharata, and he who knows its meaning is saved from all sins; tapa is innocent and study is harmless, but when abused in practice they become sources of evil.
