तपो न कल्को ऽध्ययनं न कल्कः; स्वाभाविको वेदविधिर् न कल्कः प्रसह्य वित्ताहरणं न कल्कस्; तान्य् एव भावोपहतानि कल्कः
tapo na kalko 'dhyayanaṃ na kalkaḥ; svābhāviko vedavidhir na kalkaḥ prasahya vittāharaṇaṃ na kalkas; tāny eva bhāvopahatāni kalkaḥ
“In former days the four Vedas were placed on one side and the Bharata on the other and weighed in the balance by the assembled celestials; as the Bharata weighed heavier, it has been called Mahabharata, and he who knows its meaning is saved from all sins; tapa is innocent and study is harmless, but when abused in practice they become sources of evil.
