अलंकृतं शुभैः शब्दैः समयैर् दिव्यमानुषैः छन्दोवृत्तैश् च विविधैर् अन्वितं विदुषां प्रियम् पुण्ये हिमवतः पादे मेध्ये गिरिगुहालये विशोध्य देहं धर्मात्मा दर्भसंस्तरम् आश्रितः शुचिः सनियमो व्यासः शान्तात्मा तपसि स्थितः भारतस्येतिहासस्य धर्मेणान्वीक्ष्य तां गतिम् प्रविश्य योगं ज्ञानेन सो ऽपश्यत् सर्वम् अन्ततः
alaṃkṛtaṃ śubhaiḥ śabdaiḥ samayair divyamānuṣaiḥ chandovṛttaiś ca vividhair anvitaṃ viduṣāṃ priyam puṇye himavataḥ pāde medhye giriguhālaye viśodhya dehaṃ dharmātmā darbhasaṃstaram āśritaḥ śuciḥ saniyamo vyāsaḥ śāntātmā tapasi sthitaḥ bhāratasyetihāsasya dharmeṇānvīkṣya tāṃ gatim praviśya yogaṃ jñānena so 'paśyat sarvam antataḥ
“Some bards have already published this history, some teach it now and others will promulgate it hereafter; it is a great source of knowledge, embellished with elegant expressions, and Vyasa, seated on a darbha mat in a cave of the holy Himalaya, purified himself and beheld all things.
