तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण व्यस्य वेदं सनातनम् इतिहासम् इमं चक्रे पुण्यं सत्यवतीसुतः
tapasā brahmacaryeṇa vyasya vedaṃ sanātanam itihāsam imaṃ cakre puṇyaṃ satyavatīsutaḥ
“The son of Satyavati, having by penance and meditation analysed the eternal Veda, afterwards composed this holy history - that learned Brahmarshi of strict vows, the noble Dwaipayana Vyasa, offspring of Parasara. (trans. K.M. Ganguli)”
