तेषु जातेषु वृद्धेषु गतेषु परमां गतिम् एवं वै संग्रहाध्यायः पूर्वम् एव महर्षिणा क्रमणप्रस्तरैर् युक्तः कथं चिद् अप्य् अतीव हि एतदर्थं च विहितः संग्रहो ऽयं यथाश्रुतः तच् छ्रुत्वा सर्वम् आख्यातं लोके ज्ञास्यन्ति मानवाः अब्रवीद् भारतं लोके मानुषे ऽस्मिन् महान् ऋषिः
teṣu jāteṣu vṛddheṣu gateṣu paramāṃ gatim evaṃ vai saṃgrahādhyāyaḥ pūrvam eva maharṣiṇā kramaṇaprastarair yuktaḥ kathaṃ cid apy atīva hi etadarthaṃ ca vihitaḥ saṃgraho 'yaṃ yathāśrutaḥ tac chrutvā sarvam ākhyātaṃ loke jñāsyanti mānavāḥ abravīd bhārataṃ loke mānuṣe 'smin mahān ṛṣiḥ
“It was not till after these were born, grown up and departed on the supreme journey that the great Rishi Vyasa published the Bharata in this region of mankind, having first made this compendium with the chapter of contents. (trans. K.M. Ganguli)”
